The EUROPEAN FILM FESTIVAL 7th to 15th of November 2009 in Colombo |
The European Union member states represented in Sri Lanka, Switzerland and Norway, present the “European Film Festival 2009”, a event co-organized by the Alliance Française de Colombo, which aims to present the diverse and rich cinematic culture in Europe.
The festival will be held from the 7th to 15th of November 2009 with screenings each day at 5PM and 7PM. The main film festival (9 films of 35mm) will take place at the BMICH (Bandaranayake Memorial International Conference Hall) while the fringe festival (DVD screenings of 21 films) will take place simultaneously at the British Council, Goethe-Institut and Alliance Française.
A selection of short films directed by young Sri Lankan film makers will be presented before the screening of each feature film.
European Film Festival 2009 will also be a great occasion to screen, as an exclusive preview for the opening night, Lester James Peries’ masterpiece GAMPERALIYA (1963) which has recently been restored and screened at the Cannes Film Festival 2009 under the section ‘Cannes Classics’. |

“What are you going to write this time for the magazine?” I asked
from my good friend Jude. “About ‘No Country for Old Men’ ”, answered
Jude. Mmm.... ‘No Country for Old Men’, Coen brothers’ multi Oscar
winning film. These two brothers really are something. When you look at
those two, you can’t even dream that they would make such a great film.
They really look somewhat geeky.

I like to identify this presence of pollutants in a movie as mise-en-pollution. We can find the mise-en-pollution in a movie in different forms and sizes |

The technological mutations of cinema gives the
opportunity to more and more people to have access to cinema. One has to
take advantage of this unique opportunity because one has to always, be
able to argue, wherever it could be, on political issues as one would
argue regarding a movie. Correction: Luxury is not the luxury or a
privilege,it’s a right, and everyone has the right to claim it. A
cinema review is a beautiful first step on the road to this rightful
claim.

Imagine yourself as an American Its late in the evening you feel lonely at home…..so you call a few friends… keep a popcorn bag on your lap, and as you crunch you start watching a cowboy film wow what a sight it is to see Client Eastwood with a smoky cigar in his mouth, with his small but focused eyes looking directly into the enemies’ eyes and saying to him in the good old cowboy accent “I’ll Hunt ya down n Kill ya” and of course he keeps to his word…

Cinema as a form of art, basically, falls in to two genres, namely short and feature films. This bifurcation may find closer resemblance with fiction; the short story and the novel. Early history of cinema, mostly, saw the short -length version the film. Gradually, the longer version of the film came to prominence and the short film disappeared.
